Learning objectives:

This exercise is intended to give you practice calculating and using rates, and conducting adjustment of those rates. Since these concepts are central to Epidemiology, this will give you additional time to hone your skills.

The student should be able to:

  1. Describe the distribution of death in a population by:
  2. characterizing cases with regard to sex, age, and urbanization
  3. calculating and interpreting crude and specific rates of disease or death
  4. identifying subgroups with high total and cause-specific rates of disease or death
  5. Compare population subgroups with regard to characteristics such as sex, age, and urbanization
  6. Calculate and compare crude and directly standardized rates of death or disease
  7. Calculate and interpret SMR's
