Learning Objectives:

This exercise uses the classic studies by Doll and Hill that demonstrated a relationship between smoking and lung cancer. After completing this exercise, the student should be able to:

  1. Discuss the elements of design, and the advantages and disadvantages of case-control versus prospective cohort studies;
  2. Evaluate selection bias and information bias which might have affected these studies;
  3. Calculate and interpret a disease rate by person-years of exposure, rate ratio (relative risk), and odds ratio;
  4. Appreciate how the measures do or do not reflect strength of association and the public health importance of the association;
