When you read your admissions follow-up letter, you will see several steps to follow in preparation for starting the Professional Year of Residency. Please follow these steps carefully.

Specific Action Steps

Step 1:
Make a Plan to Follow the District Calendar

You will start your internship when school begins in August and return to school in early January after the winter holiday. It is also unlikely that CU Denver's spring break and your school district's spring break will fall on different weeks. Please factor this information into your thought processes while you make personal plans during your Professional Year.

Step 2:

Register for the Correct Courses

Your academic advisor/residency coordinator will provide information on registering for the correct T-PREP section of your internship the semester before. Elementary and Early Childhood candidates will remain in the same school their entire professional residency year.

Step 3:

Apply for Your Substitute Teaching Authorization

Partner districts ask that all professional-year teacher candidates obtain their substitute licenses. If you do not already have a paid role in your district, being a substitute is a great Plan B and a way to earn income! The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has more information about becoming a substitute.

Step 4:

Establish Your Plan to Pursue Your License ASAP

- Access free resources and workshops
- Work with a success center mentor to design an individualized study plan.
Study!
Register for the exams on the Educational Testing Services (ETS) website
- Double-check the CDE website to make sure you have the correct exam code
- List CU Denver as a recipient (test code 4875)
Take the tests
- The unofficial scores will appear at the end of your exam.
- Know the CO-required minimum score beforehand to determine whether you passed.
ETS will send you a PDF of your scores about four weeks after the test date.

Save these scores!

- Please send a copy of the PDF score report to the Office of Partnerships as soon as you receive it.
