Rachel Stein - As an instructor I am aware that some class assignments can be completed using generative AI. Whenever possible I aim to mitigate this by asking you to complete self reflective activities that require you to rely on your own life experiences. However, there are also knowledge-based and writing competencies that I hope you will achieve. When using generative AI it is important that you are aware of several things. 1) Consider why you are choosing to take this course and pursue a graduate degree. Using generative AI may seem like a way to save time and energy, but you may be detracting from your own learning and educational experiences. 2) Generative AI often creates passible work, but rarely excellent work. Oftentimes you can do better. 3) Generative AI is known to make things up. This is particularly true when it comes to references, but it will also share other false information in some instances.

Chris Carson - Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words or ideas without crediting that person. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated and may lead to failure on an assignment, in the class, and dismissal from the University. (Refer to School/College guidelines.)

The use of technology to improve your writing is somewhat uncharted territory. You are expected to use tools like spell check and grammar check (Microsoft Word is available to all students) to improve the quality and readability of your writing. You might try using some of the new AI tools (such as Chat GPT) to improve your learning and work. However, you must treat words produced with AI in a manner similar to another author’s work: quote and attribute it if you’re using it word for word, cite it if you’ve used it generate ideas or structure.

Note that students who have attempted to use AI to produce writing for this class have typically done very poorly—AI uses a large-language based model, using all the writing currently out there in the online world to guess what words to use. The writing it comes up with is filled with buzz-words and nice-sounding points, but isn’t necessarily specific or asset-based. Trust in yourself! You are the only one that knows what you want to say.
