When Columbus "discovered" the Americas in 1492, it set off a series of interactions between the old world and the new that changed both profoundly.
In thinking about the impacts of Columbus's discovery, one area we can think of is the exchange of plants, animals and disease organisms between the Old World and New World. Historian Alfred Crosby named this the Columbian exchange.
